As soon as you turn the game on it greets you and shows you a cute little clip of different Pokemon go by! When you use it for the first time, it asks you whether you want to be Ash (a boy trainer) or May (a girl trainer). Turning it off and back on after that, it gives you the choice to change trainers if you want.
After that is taken care of you will be taken to the Main Menu, where you choose what you want to do with your Pokedex. The Pokedex even speaks to you, reading each name for you! Modes are: Scan Mode, Index Mode, Game Mode, Info Mode, and Volume Settings.
In Scan Mode you search an area for Pokemon to catch! Moving the cursor around and pressing the A button to search. A few beeps here and there and suddenly you've got a Pokemon in front of you! Then you have to catch it by choosing one of three rocks. If you pick the right one then the Pokemon is yours! The more rare the Pokemon the more points you get.
In Index Mode you can go through your Pokedex and get information on the Pokemon you have seen or caught. It includes: How many you have caught, the height (and it shows you on a scale compared to a real person), the weight (also compared to a real person, but I don't understand it), and the Evolutions of that Pokemon (the voice tells you the levels of the Pokemon's evolution also).
In Game Mode you can play: Who's that Pokemon (as seen on the TV show), What Evolution level (a little harder, for advanced players), What Type Pokemon, and Who Has The Advantage. All of the games are played with multiple choices and give you points towards your level!
In Info Mode it tells you your game stats! These include: Your level as a trainer, how many points you have, the number of NEW Pokemon as well as the TOTAL number of Pokemon you've found, and your favorites list, which you can edit.
The Volume Settings are very easy to figure out, and you may want to turn it down, because the default setting is kind of loud. If your child (or you!) wants to play this thing non-stop the talking and beeping will get on someones nerves eventually, trust me. Someone else said that the volume resets itself after you turn it off? Well that did not happen to me, I think it is because they let the game turn itself off instead of turning it off manually.
Finally, closing the flap will not turn off the game, but not using it for a minute will. The other way to turn the game off is to hold the B button for five seconds, as described in the instruction manual. This makes a WONDERFUL gift, so now that you know everything about it, go on and make someone happy.
