(More customer reviews)My son and I love this starter set. We've played a few times. However, now we're ready to start adding to the set with boosters. I've purchased some boosters, but they don't seem to come with energy cards, which are essential to the gameplay!
This starter set gives you some Water and Punch energy cards, which are great to start with and fit just fine with the starting mini-decks of this set, but that leaves more than half the booster cards we've purchased un-useable because they're of a different type. And the instructions don't really explain anything beyond basic gameplay. I was hoping that a starter kit like this would at least answer beginner questions like "how do I expand my deck?", "how do I play with other types of cards", "should I focus on a specific energy type, or what?" etc.
I'll probably have to end up doing research online or finding a book we can study to figure the rest of the game out. Or go to one of those meet-ups, I guess...

Pokemon PL Card Game Platinum Set of Both Theme Decks (Rebellion and Flourish) Review

(More customer reviews)My daughter's classmates are all into Pokemon. She's late to the game, and wanted to get in on the whole craze. I told her the local stores were charging too much for these decks, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that Amazon offers two of these game sets for slightly more than the cost of just one at my local Wal-Mart.
What you get for this purchase is two sets that each contain a complete play deck, a mat to play the game on, little counters you can use for the gameplay (they're like icons to show that a Pokemon is poisoned or confused), and a rule book that is well written (and will take several passes to understand).
I rate this game with a high educational value because despite my dislike of "collectible" marketing to children, there's some mental development required to be good at this game. Children not only have to understand their characters' strengths and weaknesses, they have to make good logical decisions about which creature to use and when. They often make on-the-fly decisions about how to outdo each other, and they will need to know tens-based math, adding or removing "hit points" in 10-point increments. Some of the actions you have to perform require you to concentrate, e.g., "Flip a coin. If heads, remove the bottom 7 cards from your opponent's stack. Take any one of those seven, add it to your hand, return the others to opponent's deck, and reshuffle."
If your child needs to get into the Pokemon craze, this is a great way to get started: the little slim packs don't contain all the pieces that you need to play (nor the instructions) and this made us both able to play with her booster-pack cards.

(More customer reviews)I didn't actually like Pokemon cards when they came out, but ever since I got this for my birthday, I have enjoyed playing with the cards for a while since. If you are looking for strategy, just use some cards from the sideboard (such as Swellow or Delcatty) and mix them all up! Durability is 1, because you can just rip it up, but overall, this is an excellent starter for Pokemon fans!

(More customer reviews)These are not new in original packaging! This looks like the seller just put together his rejects & sold for a high price. Over half of the cards I rec'd were Energy cards and/or Trainers... none of the others were rare, a few "uncommons", but many of them had duplicates... no foils or anything 'cool' for a preteen collector. I'm not satisfied for the dollar spent. Beware if you are a serious collector.
